San Giovanni Rotondo is famous all over the world as the native city of St. Pio (known as Padre Pio) of Pietrelcina, and as the city where the venerated monk worked his miracles. Pio was beatified in 2002.In the Capuchin Monastery Padre Pio received the stigmata in 1918, and there where all those supernatural events that led to his sainthood and canonization took place as well. It is a destination that the devout and tourists alike should make every effort to visit. The Church’s crypt also hosted, up until a few years ago, the tomb of St. Pio. The Sanctuary of the Archangel Michael, or San Michele, in the grotto dates from the 5th – 6th centuries and is the site where devotion to the Archangel Michael began. The original grotto of San Michele is said to have been consecrated by the archangel and is the only church not consecrated by human hands. The Sanctuary of the Archangel Michael is UNESCO Heritage Site since 2011.

Also known as the Capitanata or Daunia, the Province of Foggia marks the northern border of Apulia, near Molise and Campania. The eastern part is occupied by the promontory of Gargano, the "spur of the boot," and the beautiful Tremiti Islands, a favorite destination for the many visitors who every year choose an Apulian vacation. The numerous locations along the Adriatic coast offer many opportunities for fun and relaxation, especially for beach lovers and those interested in taking excursions through nature. But the charm of the hinterland is in no way inferior to the beauty of the seascape. The Tavoliere is the largest plain in the south of Italy, with its wide expanses of grain fields that shine in the summer sun and are interrupted only by the Dauni Mountains, at intervals covered with green woods. The colors, scents and sounds endow this landscape with its own particular charm. A land rich in history, archaeological excavations have uncovered its first signs of settlement, from imposing Medieval castles to a wealth of religious buildings. And, a genuine, artisan cuisine makes a trip to the Province of Foggia even more pleasant.

I took my mom to her first trip to visit Padre Pio, it was just the two of us. We werre picked up by our tour guide and driver at our hotel and the ride was 3 hours from Rome. We even requested for wheelchair which helped a lot for my mom’s mobility issues. Included was a visit to the site St. Michael appeared as well as lunch. Very pleased with this tour and well worth the experience.

We went to see the sanctuary of Padre Pio, the museum and the both old and new church. Then we had a great lunch and off we went to St Michael’s sanctuary. It was amazing and could not have been possible without a wonderful driver and our tour guide Francesco

This was absolutely amazing! Taking the trip from Rome to see the Padre Pio and St. Michael sanctuaries would have involved taking a train and then a car and would be totally inconvenient for someone who doesn’t speak Italian. Using this tour, we were picked up by Maria and our driver Luigi in our hotel lobby and taken straight to the sanctuaries in a beautiful high end car. Maria was amazing, she explained everything clearly and they took us to a 4 course lunch near Padre Pio that was absolutely outstanding! Worth every penny!

My mom had requested to visit Europe for her 70th birthday. We didn't have the resources to travel until recently so I wanted to make this a memorable trip for her, while still on a budget. Fortunately for us, we were able to do it before the covid pandemic took hold of the world. As I was researching and booking tours, I met Rossana. She was very communicative and informative, and I ended up booking three private tours with her: (1) Roman Basilicas, (2) Padre Pio and St. Michael the Archangel Sanctuary, and (3) Assisi and Cascia. She even helped me navigate how to attend an audience with my mom and the Pope. Rossana and Luigi treated us like family! They met us promptly in Rome, picking us up and dropping us off at our hotel. They brought a beautiful bouquet of flowers to celebrate my mom's birthday, which my mom later left for Padre Pio. They were very accommodating to my mom's mobility needs and provided a wheel chair. At all times, I felt my mom was safe in their care. Rossana was very knowledgeable and conveyed her knowledge about every location we went. It was clear that she is passionate about Italy, it's culture, and it's history. The Roman Basilica tour was a great way to see an overview of the city as well. One of the benefits of the private tours was being able to stay in an area as long as we wanted, which also gave us time to pray when we visited my mom's favorite saint, Padre Pio, and my favorite saint, St. Francis of Assisi. It also meant we had the opportunity to eat at some delicious family-run restaurants. On our journey to visit St. Francis, St. Claire, and St. Rita, we bumped into a church group visiting from Naples, first helping them take group photos and then as we prepared for evening mass at Cascia. Rossana was incredible, stepping in to interpret for us. When we met again at a gas station on our way back to Rome, we made plans to visit them in Naples and Rossana agreed to be our guide. I cannot thank Rossana and Luigi enough for making my mom's birthday truly an enjoyable and memorable one! We cannot wait to go back and see Naples with Rossana and Luigi when it is safe to do so!

San Giovanni Rotondo and Monte Sant'Angelo The MOST BEAUTIFUL TOUR experience of the two greatest saints ever! Saint Padre Pio and St Michael’s shrine. Thanks to the MOST AMAAAAZING and the BEST TOUR GUIDE ROSSANA, and the BEST SAFEST DRIVER LUIGI for making it possible. A ONE DAY TOUR to do BOTH? Oh YES! Everything about this whole tour was PRICELESS! So FUN and there was NEVER a dull moment riding on our way there. Rossana was SO CARING, she always made sure that we felt safe and comfortable. I knew right away that my husband and I could TRUST her and Luigi…just like that, we felt that instant connection with them, like a FAMILIA big time, which was so important esp for our first trip in Italy. Why did we pick the Padre Pio and St Michael Gargano combo tour? Happy to share that Padre Pio has always been so important to our family, ever since our marriage 20 years ago. She took great pics too; she could solve any issues, she just knew how to make our whole experience extremely pleasant and fun. She also helped touched our holy rosary beads and items to the tombs of St Padre Pio..,she was on “autopilot” to help at ALL TIMES, no need to ask her for help she just did it!!! And the driver Luigi was also extremely patient, always ready to help as well. ❤️ Anyway, we got to see Padre Pio’s body and touch the glass and then pray a bit. We were even able to go to mass also beforehand and confessions are available if so desired. And the gift shop was so amazing, a nice surprise compared to what you might expect. Top quality, yet so affordable, couldn’t find anything like this online. Afterwards, Rosanna knew we needed a break as she constantly sought our best interests and comfort the entire time. She was so alert and accommodating and so we then stopped to rest up and take in an amazing, delicious Italian lunch at the the local family-friendly ristorante. We then finished up the tour at San Giovanni Rotondo by visiting the older areas of the convent and museum. So many wonderful exhibits and relics to view from Padre Pio’s life. Truly just a miraculous experience that everyone should stop and go to pay respects to the greatest saint of our modern times. But most importantly, to use Rome Italy Explora, nothing else bec it will help you have the most amazing and pleasant experience and at the same time save you a lot of stress. And that’s just Padre Pio. A little nap in the private car ride to St Michael’s Mont’San Angelo and we’re already there….Luigi knew exactly how to drive through mountainous terrain and we parked at the perfect strategic location. What an amazing safe expert driver Luigi truly was! Rosanna courteously led us through a charming little Italian castle-village as we approached one of the most sacred sites on earth, consecrated by the Archangel himself. Having researched this site beforehand, it was so surreal to be standing on hallowed ground. Perfectly timed again by the tour group, we were able to assist at mass with near front row seating as we had put on our wish-list beforehand. Another majestic experience feeling the presence of the angels and offering up all our intentions to St Michael to intercede with God for us and all our loved ones and concerns back home. We couldn’t thank Rosanna and Luigi enough and they never failed to impress us with their most loving, caring, perseverance and cool, calm demeanor. We took our sweet time again at yet another amazing, top-quality yet affordable gift shop, and even though it was getting late and it was a long ride back to Rome, they never showed any anxiety… and we felt so honored and privileged to have found them to be our guides on this amazing pilgrimage and life long desired visit. To sum up, THE BEST of THE BEST private tour guides (just like family) you know they have your back should ANYTHING GO WRONG and they will NEVER let you down. They truly CARED and it never felt like a business transaction. LOTS OF LOVE AND TRUE DEDICATION from these two amazing people. So blessed and grateful! We spent two hours in this museum and enjoyed every bit of it. There have a wonderful grouping of lions sculptures on the steps as you enter. It looks like a pride lounging. I wanted to pet them. Inside there was a notable set of dog sculpture that looks to be in a tussle. There were many Spanish impressionist painting as well as a Van Gogh, two Courbets, a few Rodins and a single Cezanne. The rest of the museum had wonderful juxtaposition between modern and classic. Often we would look through the rooms to see a classical sculpture next to very modern pieces. Loved it. There is a nice cafe with table service. There of course were bathrooms, downstairs, and lockers for your backpack. There is a bus/tram stop right out front. Definitely worth a few hours of time!

My aunt and I had the absolute best time with Francesco (guide) and Luigi (driver) !!! Francesco conducted himself very professionally and was clear in giving directions. He came across as very knowledgeable, both in terms of historical and cultural fact, as well as providing anecdotes that were very interesting. Luigi, our driver, was careful and brought us back to our hotel in a timely manner. He also made the necessary stops during the long trip to accommodate our needs. This particular tour allowed us into a few exclusive places (both at Padre Pio and St Michael sanctuaries). Truly holy and miraculous, my aunt experienced a miracle right after leaving Padre Pio sanctuary! I would highly, very highly recommend, that you also take and try this beautiful tour and memorable experience!

Luigi y Francesco muy atentos y muy puntuales. Gracias a su guía pudimos ahorrar tiempo para entrar a los lugares y aprovechar nuestra visita al máximo. Les dije que era cumpleaños de mi madre y fueron muy agradables y hasta organizaron un pastel con “Tanti Auguri a te” que cantaron todas las personas en el restaurante durante la comida. Algunas de las fotos más bonitas de nuestro viaje fueron en estos momentos y mi mamá estuvo muy feliz y muy complacida de cumplís su sueño de ver al padre Pio.

We have the most wonderful and spiritual time on San Giovanni Rotondo. Our tour guide Francesco brought the perfect combination of spiritual knowledge ( we are Catholic Pilgrims in Rome for the 2025 Jubilee ) and the prudence / deference to understand we needed time to pray without jeopardizing the tour pace and sharing very valuable information so we can deeply understand the historical and spiritual aspects of Padre Pío plus the stop at the wonderful Archangel Michael’s Groto. It’s a must tour if you are visiting Italy on spiritual journey/pilgrimage. Very nice drive from Rome to San Giovanni Rotondo and back with enough time to have a great capuccino.

This was a trip we took as a couple, and it was a fantastic experience. If you're looking for a personalized and memorable outing, this is a great option. The drive from Rome takes about 3–4 hours, making it a full-day excursion from early morning until night. However, the time passed quickly thanks to the warm and welcoming atmosphere created by our driver and guide. The car was very comfortable, and the guide provided excellent explanations of the sites we visited. They were always attentive to our questions and made sure we felt informed and cared for throughout the day. It was definitely worth the investment. Special thanks to Maria Luisa, our knowledgeable and friendly guide, and to Luigi, our professional and courteous driver. We were very pleased with the entire experience.
