The tour explores two ancient Roman cities frozen in time by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. In Pompeii, visitors walk through a large, bustling city, seeing stone streets, public buildings, baths, theaters, shops, and richly decorated houses. The site shows everyday Roman life, from politics and religion to entertainment and trade. Plaster casts of victims powerfully illustrate the sudden tragedy of the eruption. In Herculaneum, the tour continues in a smaller but better-preserved town. Buried by volcanic mud, Herculaneum retains multi-story houses, wooden doors, furniture, and vivid wall paintings. The visit ends at the ancient shoreline, where residents sought shelter in boat houses. Together, Pompeii and Herculaneum provide a complete picture of Roman life—Pompeii for its size and variety, and Herculaneum for its remarkable preservation—highlighting both the culture and the human impact of the volcanic disaster.

The spectral ruins of ancient Pompeii lead to one of the world’s most engrossing archaeological experiences. Much of the site’s value lies in the fact that the town wasn’t simply blown away by Vesuvius in AD 79 but buried under a layer of lapilli (burning fragments of pumice stone). The result is a remarkably well-preserved slice of ancient life, where visitors can walk down Roman streets and pry around millennial old houses, temples, shops, cafes and amphitheatres. With a private and historian guide, you will be able to visit what is considered to be Europe’s most important archaeological site. Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town situated in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, submerged under a torrent of mud and lava after Mount Vesuvius eruption in 79 AD. The buildings have been so well preserved that you can walk down the streets pretty much exactly as the Romans would have done over 2000 years ago! Together with your guide, you’ll visit many of the most important sites, public baths with their well-preserved frescoes and mosaics, shops and the gymnasium.

If you're a lover of ancient Greek and Roman history, you'll love this tour. You visit three major sites with a guide in one day. Yes, it is a long day, but we loved every minute of it. Our guide Teresa and our driver Ottavio were terrific. Both very friendly and Teresa was really knowledgeable. You could tell she really knew about each site, Herculaneum, Pompeii and Paestum and was passionate about each one. Our guide and driver were accomodating for the long day including bathroom breaks, stops to buy water, pictures, and time in the museum at Paestum and even a quick stop at an ATM in the shops near Paestum. It was particularly hot when we went and although we are not totally out of shape, we do live in climate control in the US and she was mindful of when we looked overheated and needed a short break to sit for a moment or while climbing up a hill. In addition, Rossana arranged the tour and was friendly and helpful and receptive to all of our needs/wants for the tour. She was always in communication and always available whenever I had a question. All around great day and I would highly recommend for those interested in such sites.

What an amazing day! This tour is filled with history, beauty, and wonder! Every detail was taken care of down to having our Covid test. At late lunch at Tasso in Sorrento was the perfect stop after visiting the ruins.

More about this tour

Campania is one of the regions of Southern Italy and stretches along the Tyrrhenian Sea, from the mouth of the Garigliano River to the Gulf of Policastro. The mild climate, the beauty of the coasts, the richness of its art and history, and the love for food make Campania the fascinating territory that it is. The journey begins with the sea, the region's uncontested queen, with its intense colors, its coasts that are crawling with bays, coves and rock faces. The waters here boast the islands in the Gulf of Naples, Capri and Ischia - true natural masterpieces. This region is made even more charming by the flourishing Mediterranean vegetation that alternates with its small, charming towns that narrate the history and traditions of Campania and make any stay here unforgettable. And how can we forget the natural endowments that dominate this region: Vesuvius, gloomy and mysterious, loved for its beauty and feared for its power. Then, Naples, famous around the world for the intensity and passion of its music, but not only, mingles high-brow culture with the popular, the sacred with the profane, and the joyful with the melancholic. Sorrento, a town that spreads over a terrace of tufo, seems to tumble into the sea. Throughout this view paradisical panorama, indented and inaccessible coasts weave their colors with those of small and hidden beaches, creating a unique and enthralling scenery. Here, the work of man is truly monolithic. The roughest areas are now made up of a series of terraces sloping down towards the sea, used for the cultivation of citrus, olive trees and vines. These gardens give off heady scents of oranges, lemons and orange-blossoms. Music and entertainment, sun and sea, history and culture. Visiting places like Paestum; Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Torre Annunziata; the Chartreuse of Padula; and the Royal Palace of Caserta will all take you back in time and far away from the quotidian!
