A visit to this Cellar is a voyage in time and history: here is the essence of the sweet Tuscan earth, the wine, that they already took care of, worshiped and consumed in happiness and joy, with passion and tenacity our distant ancestors, the Etruscans, some centuries earlies than the Christian era. Montepulciano is well known for the great production of red wine, it’s “Nobile di Montepulciano” is one of the most appreciated Italian wines in Italy and abroad. Montepulciano has a distinct peculiarity, in that you can find several historic cantinas right within the city walls, which have been dug out underneath the prestigious palazzos. The cellar you are going to visit is an immense cross vaulted arches, which make it resemble a Roman-Gothic Cathedral. Respecting the philosophy of great red wines, and the terms defined for the aging in wood here we find rows of enormous Slavonian oak barrels, perfectly conserved, where lie thousands of hectolitres of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and other rows with dozens of tonneaux and barrique barrels made of quality French wood.

With covid still being a concern in early February, I was looking for a private tour and we discovered a gem in Rosanna and Luigi! They picked us up at our Airbnb and drove us to Montepulciano and provided information about the area along the way. We had a nice walk through Montepulciano. The wine cellar was amazing! Historical! And the views of the countryside were beautiful. Everything you'd expect Tuscany to be. The wine tasting was delicious and they provided so much information. We were able to ship some home. Arrived back in Rome with plenty of time to freshen up for dinner. Rosanna was a gracious host and offered advice/tips for the rest of our trip. Highly recommend this tour!!!

One of our favorite days in Italy!! It was so nice to be picked up at our hotel and have a comfortable ride to Montepulciano. Once there we were able to see the plaza and take a tour of the stunning underground winery. Great wine, amazing views and Bianca was a fabulous guide. I would definitely go again.

By far one of the best day trips I’ve ever had! Once I booked the tour I received welcoming correspondence from the tour company. Then came Rossana… EXCEPTIONAL! She contacted me a couple days before with confirmation of pick up et… Our driver Lucca was awesome! They were waiting outside the convertible Mercedes van for us as we walked out our front door. On the way Rossana pointed out various sites and points of interest. Recognizing that we had a late night before, we stopped for coffee along the way. Then there was our arrival to this truly magical place Montepulciano!!! There is the most breathtaking landscape that surrounds this beautiful town. We lucked out being it is close to Christmas. There was a Christmas market in the square. We walked around the charming stands. Rossana helped us with any translation along with understanding the various areas that the things were made. They also carried our purchases for us and put away safely in the van (this was especially nice after we bought wine at De’Ricci Cantine Storiche). I did not think the day could get better but I was way wrong… next was our wine tasting tour at De’Ricci which is located right in the middle of the town. Emilio was our wine tour aficionado! Not only is the wine cellar magical the history is too. I can not even to attempt to describe the cellar in fear I would not do it justice. After the tour we gathered at a table for the tasting. We tasted 6 incredible wines and enjoyed a plate of various delicious treats and pasta. I love wine and being from California with Napa and Sonoma right there I must admit I can be a bit picky. I ended up shipping 60+ bottles home and bringing 6 bottles back to our place in Rome. There were four of us in our party and each of us can’t stop talking about our incredible day. I apologize for the lengthy review but I think it’s important to know what you’re booking and with whom. I have stored Rossana’s contact information and will be booking with RomeItalyExplora for the personalized tours they provide. Absolutely incredible day, thank you Rossana for going over and above any expectation!

More about this tour

Travelling through beautiful Tuscany, among the rolling hills and small lakes on the border with Umbria, you will come across this ancient town, Montepulciano, which stands on a hill overlooking the Val di Chiana and val d’Orcia. This is a town which is rich in history and art, set in the agricultural landscape of Siena, the ideal place to relax, but also to live in contact with nature, surrounded by gentle hills covered with olive groves, vineyards and forests of pine and chestnut trees. A fortress looks down over the old town of Montepulciano, where on the beautiful Piazza Grande you can admire the Town Hall, built in the fourteenth century and the seventeenth-century cathedral also known as the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta. The recumbent statue of Bartolomeo Aragazzi by Michelozzo together with an Assumption by Taddeo di Bartolo may also be admired inside the three-nave cathedral. Palazzo Tarugi, completely covered in travertine, also overlooks the square. We would also like to point out Piazza delle Erbe, the monumental and isolated church of San Biagio, also known as the "Temple", and that of St. Augustine, Palazzo Cervini, designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, and the Civic Museum, which displays beautiful masterpieces of Sienese and Florentine art. Famous for its ancient traditions, every year Montepulciano renews its folklore with spectacular events. Beginning with the "Bravio delle botti" (The barrel contest), a competition between districts, which takes place in the streets of the city. Do not miss the spectacular "Bruscello Poliziano": popular Tuscan traditional theatrical shows which have been repeated every year in the Cathedral churchyard since 1939. Montepulciano and the hilly clay areas on the edge of the Valdichiana plain such as Valiano, the Abbey of Montepulciano, Sant'Albino, Argiano, San Gavino, Gracciano, are the area of production of the Vino Nobile of Montepulciano. The grape that characterizes this aristocratic wine is the Prugnolo Gentile. The Consorzio of Vino Nobile and several major wineries are based here in Montepulciano, including the Cantina del Redi, directly connected to the roof terrace of Palazzo Ricci.
